About the Project:

We are looking for Greater Manchester based actors for Lunchtime Audio: vol 1. a project that will be released early in 2027, but are recording in November of 2026. We have commissioned writers to write individual one-hour standalone audio dramas – the details of each can be found on the next few slides.

 

Each drama will has a different director attached to it. You are only needed during the time of the drama you are attached to, this means being there for your five-hour recording session.

 

The flat fee for this project is £200.

 

We welcome all range of experiences; this includes if you have an interest in audio acting but haven’t done so before now.

​The Love We Never Had:

About:

The Love We Never Had is a two-hander audio drama that follows Lucy and Ryan, a young couple who quickly fall in love while trying to cope with their own personal struggles.

 

As their relationship grows, Ryan begins to feel lost, insecure, and left behind, leading him down a harmful online path that changes the way he sees himself and those around him.

 

The piece explores loneliness, masculinity, and emotional abuse, showing how love can become distorted when pain goes unaddressed.

Casting:

Lucy (Female. Play Age early 20s)

Lucy is a caring, thoughtful, and ambitious young woman who recently moved to the city after losing her mother. She is passionate about dance and dreams of building a career from it. Throughout the play, Lucy tries to help Ryan while holding onto her own hopes for the future.

 

Ryan (Male. Early 20s)

Ryan is a sensitive and creative young man who works at his father's garage and dreams of becoming a photographer. He often feels uncertain about his future and struggles with feelings of failure and insecurity. As he becomes isolated and influenced by harmful online content, his frustration and anger grow, putting strain on his relationship with Lucy.

Salt And Ashes

About:

Salt and Ashes is a three-hander where central character Leah, struggling to come to terms with the violent death of her son, returns to the Channel Island she left in the wake of his passing.

 

To understand his world, she begins open-water swimming lessons with her friend Henry, facing the sea which has long intimidated her.

 

Meanwhile, Theo, another old friend, drifts back into her life, grappling with his own loneliness in a more unpredictable way through his art, drawing Leah into his world.

Casting:

Leah (Female. 40s)

An art teacher returning to the Channel Islands after fleeing five years prior. Five years ago, her son committed a murder on the island, and she abruptly moved to Hampshire, cutting off her island life and friends. Now back on the island, she struggles with parental guilt, grief, and learning to swim in the sea. She has a metaphorical journey of learning to face her fear of the ocean, while also discovering how to live with her past.

 

Henry (Male. 40s)

An old friend of Leah’s who resents her for leaving the island so suddenly, helping her to confront her past by teaching her how to swim in the sea. He is focused on reintegrating Leah into the island community, and is the voice of accountability/reality. He is strict with teaching Leah to swim, blunt and angry.

 

Theo (Male. 40s)

An erratic fellow art teacher and friend of Leah’s, since their time at art college together. Theo is extremely lonely on the island, and deals with this through painting and a relapse into gambling. He is dramatic and insecure about his work, and lives by a promise not to judge Leah for her departure, providing a safe space where she doesn’t have to talk about her son. He spirals into chaos of his own, while Leah recovers, representing the hopelessness of refusing to talk about what’s on your mind.

Stevie is Typing…

About:

The year is 2011- a lonely gay teen spends his nights hidden away in his bedroom, escaping into anonymous online chats with strangers who are easier to face than the world outside his door.

 

Unhappy, and desperate for connection, he believes nobody truly sees him—until one night he meets someone online who seems to really understand him.

 

Reality and fantasy blur, as he starts to confide in... Who, exactly?

Casting:

Mel’ (Male. Playing age 16-years-old.) * Actor must be over 18

A gay teen whose world revolves around online chats and Cheryl Cole. Unable to be himself in his own life, he seeks solace in the replies of anonymous strangers. As he begins to come to terms with his desires, what does he really want from these so-called seedy online encounters? Sex? Attention? Or, a friend?

 

Stevie (Male. Playing age 17-years-old.) * Actor must be over 18

Confident, rude, and seemingly fearless. He is everything that Mel’ isn’t, but beneath the swagger, there’s something harder to read. Is Stevie everything he appears to be, or is there more going on beneath the surface?

 

Mel’s Mum (Female. Playing age 30s.) Bullish, impulsive, and consumed by her love life. Mel’ is an afterthought in the face of her next chance at happiness. Her own romantic failures repeatedly take priority over her son.

 

PJ (Male. Playing age 17-years-old.) * Actor must be over 18

Malevolent, calculating, yet charming on the surface. PJ is an A grade student who can do no wrong in the eyes of his teachers. He knows exactly how to manipulate people- and how to make sure no one sees what he’s really like.
